What is Unique About This Trek.

Meesapulimala Trek is the Highest possible Trek route South to Himalayas. The peak is at 8630 feet above sea level. The Trek route passes through grass lands and rhododendrons. There is a great chance of sighting wildlife including Nilgiri Thar, Sambar Deer, Wild Gaur, Wild Dogs and even the Sloth Bear. At the Meesapulimala peak you feel like being on top of the world at the summit.

How to Book This

Meesapulimala belongs to Kerala Forest Development Corporation. You need a permission letter by the KFDC Range Officer to enter the region. After getting the permission, you need to reach Silent Valley, about 28 Kilometers away from Munnar Town. Though, if you are foreigner and have hired travel agency they will arrange the permissions and all the stuff for you. Preparation for the trek

Meesapulimala Trek is a challenging trek and you would be covering over 15 Kilometres this day. This is not ideal for a person without any prior trekking experience. If you are new to this, I would suggest a good preparation before the trek. You should plan daily brisk walking or jogging for couple of weeks so that your body is prepared for this. Believe me its worth all the trouble to do the Meesapulimala Trek.

Things to Carry

The Meesapulimala trek starts from Silent Valley, which is at 5800 ft and the weather is very pleasant here. By noon the Sun gets really strong, so you need to protect yourself from the strong UV rays. You also need to understand that there is no access to your vehicle or any support after you depart Silent Valley, so you need to carry all necessary items you require for the entire day.

The brief list of things to carry is as follows:

  • Cap to cover your head and neck
  • Good Walking shoes
  • Full Length Trousers
  • At least 2 Liters of Water
  • Basic refreshment like Peanut Candys, fruits etc
  • Packed Lunch
  • Rain Jacket
  • Camera

Duration and Timings of Trekking

Since it’s a full day trek, I would suggest you to stay in Munnar for few days and enjoy 2-3 days. You need to reach the forest office by 07:00 Am, so that you could start the trek at least by 08:00. This is to ensure that you could be back at the start point by 5:00 Pm at the latest. The duration totally depends on your physical fitness. It will take about 7 to 9 hours to complete the full route.

From my experience of travelling across the country over the last a decade, I feel that Meesapulimala Trek is one of the best trekking trail you can have in Kerala. Since the area has restricted access, you get a feel of an exclusive trek through some pristine landscapes only found is such high altitudes. This trek gives you a great sense of achievement and confidence as you climb the summit. I would suggest that every traveler, should try this trek at least once in a lifetime to push your limits and also be proud to have suce spectacular location in beautiful country i.e India.
