A symbol of love, the Taj Mahal was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 as a final resting place for his cherished wife. Taking more than 20 years to be completed, the detail and engineering that went into this structure was revolutionary for its time. An extraordinary monument of Mughal architecture, the structure combines influences from India, Persia and Islam in its façade. The allure and mystic are driven by the shimmering marble that was used. The white surface is known to seemingly change colour, in light of the sun or the moon, which makes for a truly enchanting effect. The marble is made even more brilliant by the use of semi-precious stones, such as jade, crystal, lapis lazuli, amethyst, and turquoise. These inlaid jewels form a technique known as “pietra dura”, an intricate design scheme. The central dome reaches a height of 240 feet, and is surrounded by four smaller domes, then flanked by four slender minarets. Calligraphy, verses from the Quran, are inscribed on the arched entrances.

Now recognized as a World UNESCO Heritage Site, the construction of this impressive complex required 20,000 workers, 1,000 elephants, and 2 decades of edifice. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, the emperor was able to see the mausoleum from his own palace, across the river.
